Learning programming has been something on my bucket list for quite some time now, but does programming help with SEO? Yes and in fact programming is going to help a whole heck of a lot as there is huge synergy between the two skills, both mentally and functionally. While most people who have a background in both programming and in SEO started with programming, I am going to be moving from a heavily focused background in both Finance and SEO (I have been studying both for a huge portion of my day everyday for like the last 7 to 10 years) and trying to add programming or software engineering to this as an additional skill. My goal and really my dream at the moment, and I can’t even believe that I have been fantasizing about this really, is to build a website that makes like $10,000 to $20,000 per month and to have like half a million dollars or more saved up. From here, I would like to drop out of my job in Finance (once I have the money of course) to go full time on the website. In order to keep growing my skills however, and to keep some social engagement alive so I’m not just sitting around the house writing blog posts all day, what I would like to do is go back to school full time for a Software Engineering degree. I think it would be really cool to

1. Be around Engineers
2. Meet Engineering Women
3. To learn Computer Programming and get very good or at least functional at it
4. To have the skills to get a job as a computer programmer and sharpen the axe even further as a programmer.

If I had some decently good programming skills, as well as strong SEO skills and a strong finance background and resume, I think that it would make me super dangerous and able to build a massively scaleable internet SEO company, which has been my main goal and dream ever since I was 21 years old, albeit it might very well be a pipe. dream. There are so many issues that pop up constantly that I need to have my business partner, the back end, technical and programming side of the business, both when I am trying to go on offense and when I am trying to go on defense. For example, I have been trying to get a second affiliate website designed, I constantly have server or plugin issues that require a programmer to fix, and I constantly have to outsource my web design, if I want to add featured snippets, if I need the silo architecture code modified, and so much more. This website would not be where it is today without my business partner being a programmer,  to give an example, we initially wrote an HTML script that we could use to hold our website silo architecture. My programmer soon realized that he could build something on our back end that silo’d each category of posts to each other. Now, all I have to do is write SILO at some part of my blog post, and it will literally fill in the full silo without me building it. All I have to do is weave each post category together with each other, which is a pain, don’t get me wrong, but is not nearly as difficult. This is just one of the many examples, programming can really help scale up your SEO and your profits.

Programming Helps You Think More Clearly

Yeah you read that right, I truly believe that anyone that can teach themselves this skill has changed the way that their brain maps out and solves mathematical problems as a result of it. It is so huge to be able to do this not just for the job market, but for the way that it teaches you how to think. One of my favorite thinkers of this generation Jordan Peterson has said that writing is a gateway to thinking. I think that where a ton of writing and reading can make somewhat smart, learning to program a computer can REALLY make someone dangerous in the job market and with how smart they are. If you leave this off the table, I don’t think you can call yourself a true genius without this. Even just learning SEO and Finance which are two heavily math based skills, I can tell you that my thinking has improved pretty significantly.

Programming Allows You to Control All of the Means of Production for Your Website

Aside from all of the above, the fact that you can be completely hands on and able to fix every single website issue that comes your way is a truly amazing skill to have. Both on the side of the offensive and the defensive, whether you are fixing errors or whether you are growing your SEO power on your website by implementing Silos, adding rich snippets and schema markup, or trying to game the system to steal featured snippets, programming being combined with SEO is like the CSA to the advisor, the Woz to your Jobs,  the manager and operations lead to the flashy salesman, you need both, and with one person having both you can really go a long way.

It Gives You An Additional Freelance Income

If we are starting from home plate for how you can make the most money from SEO and building up, it is to build your own affiliate website that makes money. There is just no way around it, you can’t beat incoming that is both scaleable and completely passive. However, getting there is another story, you will likely need between 1000 and 5000, correctly optimized and well written articles in order to take you to the promised land and give you enough of a sustainable income here, which is either going to take a lot of time and manpower, or is going to cost you money. The best ways to raise cash when you are first starting is to:

Get the best paying job you can manage

Get a freelance writing gig – You can make more off freelance writing than it costs to buy from freelance writers, which can make you a decent amount of money.

Get a freelance programming gig – great way to sharpen your skillset and get extra cash

Get a contracting gig as a programmer

Move into accounting as a Programmer and get a six figure salary

Becoming a programmer makes you dangerous in the job market and if you are running or starting your own business, and it is a coveted skill that I have had for some time now because I am just now starting to learn of its immense power. It is even stronger than having strong financial knowledge in some respects, and even has its advantages over having good people skills and a good social network (although I wouldn’t say its that powerful).

Programming Allows You To Split Test More Quickly and Easily

In terms of growing your website, when you hit a certain level of traffic, say 50,000 or 100,000 page views per month, split testing different ad placements or affiliate and e-commerce placements is a very effective way to quickly scale your affiliate income. You can easily go from $3,000 to $5 or $6,000 per month with the right monetization strategy, it just depends on how much time you want to put into this. You will need some programming knowledge, ability to setup APIs, ability to do web design and some web development and possibly even the ability to muck around in the PHP if such is needed, in order to fully make up the range of possible split tests on your own, once again programming can make you super powerful with this.

Adding In Other Skills to SEO Like Design, Data Science, Programming, and Finance, Can Really Make You a Very Dangerous SEO Competitor

My first year out of college working at a start-up company made me something of a specialized generalist in terms of computer skills, and did a good job at increasing my skills in just about every single facet of computers. I learned additional SEO, I learned App Store Optimization, I learned paid advertising, I learned paid advertising for Mobile Applications, I learned some SQL and basic programming skills, I honed my Excel skills to the point where they were really good, I learned some new tricks with photoshop and design, and much much more. Combining all of these skills together on top of heavy finance knowledge and the computer skills base that I already had really made me a fierce competitor in just about any 9 to 5 job, now especially in sales jobs I typically have the best computer skills in the entire office.
